AFTER narrowly missing out on the job of his dreams, Olly Pike took matters into his own hands.

The Rayleigh-based 26-year-old just failed to land a presenting job on two satellite children’s channels and immediately set about creating his own online programme, the Olly Pop Show.

He got 20,000 hits on his YouTube channel in just a matter of months and now Olly hopes its popularity will soon catch the eye of mainstream producers.

“Things have been going really well with the programme and the next step is to put together a pilot show to send out to all of the television channels I think might be interested in showing it,” said the former FitzWimarc School pupil.

“I'm really proud and pleased with how well it's been going so far and the feedback I’ve been getting is brilliant.

“I have people from all over the world getting in touch to say they’ve been watching the shows and it’s proved to be really popular.

“Children’s television is always something I’ve wanted to do and I’ve come close to getting a presenting job on a few occasions.

“Every time I would get down to the last two or three and then just miss out which was pretty frustrating.

“But in a way that fired me up to show people I could do it and that’s when I came up with the idea of the Olly Pop Show. My dream is for it to be shown on television which is what I’m working towards at the moment.”

The programme sees Olly and Pop, a balloon shaped character, work their way through a number of artistic activities in various local locations.

Together the duo make a number of fun items ranging from snail shaped bread to Chinese lanterns. Olly feels the simplicity of the tasks is the secret behind its success.

“I remember watching similar shows when I was younger and you never had any of the stuff you needed to make any of the items,” said Olly.

“But it's different with what I make because I just use things everyone has in the house. I think that’s why people enjoy joining in with the tasks we do on the show.”

As a result, Olly is often inundated with viewers sending him pictures of their own attempts and the programme now also has its own column in Raring 2 Go children’s magazine

All this has been achieved from Olly's home in Rayleigh .

“I bought a video camera so I could film the show and then put it together on my computer,” says Olly.

“Every showtakes a day or two to put together, but coming up with new ideas is fun.”

Having to perform is nothing new for Olly. He spent two years playing Cliff Richard in the hit West End Show, We Will Rock You.

He also starred in the CBBC show Trapped as Wiley Sneak and is currently appearing in a touring production of the children’s television show, Dora the Explorer.

He will soon be shown on BBC Three’s Be Your Own Boss where he tried to win investment for his programme.

“Unfortunately I didn’t progress in to the latter stages, but it was good to get the logo on television and hopefully it won’t be the last time that happens,” says Olly.

Olly is still seeking financial backing and can be contacted by any company willing to support him, through his website.
