AVELEY WI

DESPITE poor weather, 36 members attended the January meeting, and were welcomed by the president Doreen Kelly.

The December party and the visit to the Calendar Girls show had both been enjoyed, and a trip to the Thameside Theatre in Grays is being arranged to see Dick Barton.

Knitted goods and toiletries have been delivered to the Seamen’s Mission in Tilbury as they are always in need of these.

We also need to collect items for George Mills’ Romanian children’s charity at Chernigov, and we will give these to him at the annual meeting in March.

Our speaker, Sharon Pritchard, gave us a comprehensive insight into Thurrock’s domestic refuse collections and recycling systems, and how the range of materials will be extended in April when the council takes over from the present contract.

She explained how the contents of each of our wheelie bins were dealt with – paper and glass are recycled, the food and garden waste is made into ‘soil improver’ and only the green bin contents go to the expensive option of landfill.

These measures are necessary to meet Government recycling targets and to keep refuse disposal costs to a minimum.

The competition winners for a home-made recycled item were Barbara Harris (first) and Jackie Garwood, and the flower of the month was won by Vera Adams and raffle winner was May Donaldson. Our next meeting is February 9 at 7.30pm in Aveley Band Hall.
