3:17pm Thursday 10th December 2009
ON Wednesday, November 25, the Thurrock branch of U3A held its final meeting for 2009 at the Civic Hall in Grays.
Chairman Maggie Whitbread reported good attendance at the various groups, however there are vacancies for the whist group.
The computer literacy group is to be reformed at the Grays School in the New Year. A wine and Rhine cruise is being arranged for June 2010. The painting for pleasure group hopes to offer a second group shortly.
Peter Woodcock presented his filmed record of the activities of the various groups including the Tinsel and Turkey holiday at Gunton Hall.
The guest for the day was Martyn Harrison, an actor and singer currently appearing at the Coliseum Theatre London in Turandot, a stage adaptation of the Puccini opera.
His subject was a century of British musical theatre.
He illustrated his talk by rendering the songs in a fine tenor voice ranging up to falsetto with recorded backing. The subject matter started with Walter Monkton, through Gilbert and Sullivan into Ivor Novello and on to the work of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Bringing it right up to the rock era.
His enthusiasm for his subject was such that he got the entire audience singing and waving their arms. A real professional musical treat!
The committee wish all members a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
The next monthly meeting will be on January 27 at the Civic Hall, Grays, at 10am.
