WE were pleased to participate in the recent Flower Festival at St Michael’s Church, and the perfect weather helped in making it an enjoyable event.
The visit to the British Legion poppy factory at Richmond was very enlightening; we were told about the history of poppy day, and the different types of wreaths for various members of the Royal Family.
We saw poppies being made for 2010 as the ones needed for this year’s Remembrance Day had already gone to the distribution centre, and we each made our own poppy. A donation was made to the British Legion.
A visit to Calendar Girls in London has been organised for January.
The Essex Federation of WIs has arranged a carol concert in Colchester.
Our members will soon be busy making cakes for the stall at Aveley Christmas Market and knitting hats for the local Seafarers Mission as well as collecting suitable items for the seafarers for Christmas.
Our October speaker was Pauline Martingale, a retired prison officer, who had worked at Holloway and Wormwood Scrubs.
She gave an informative talk about her life and prison experiences and explained how prisoners are given responsibilities and treated as positively as possible. Val Swain, who also won the competition for a relevant limerick, gave the vote of thanks. Margaret Rogerson won the Flower of the Month competition.
Visitors are always welcome at 7.30pm in the Aveley Band Hall on the second Tuesday of the month.
