THURROCK RETIRED TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION

PRESIDENT Audrey Haines gave a warm welcome to members – best wishes were sent to those who were unable to attend because of illness or accidents.

She then introduced speaker Graham Bigg, who was talking about Life Below Stairs at the Mansion House.

This is the official residence and the family home of the Lord Mayor of London during the one year in which he holds office.

Graham served as head chef to five Lord Mayors and organised many banquets for the Guilds, foreign Heads of State and the Queen.

He brought along many photographs of formal events and beautifully decorated menu cards – each specially designed for the Lord Mayor at that time and the particular chief guest.

To end what had been a fascinating morning, Graham produced a copper table stove and pan and proceeded to cook enough Crepe Suzettes, flavoured with Grand Marnier, to give each member a tantalising taste. While doing this, he was able to answer questions from members.

The next meeting will be on the third Friday of November at 10.15am at the Masonic Hall, in Lenthall Avenue, when the theme will be Slides and Legends of Old Leigh.
