WHEN Ryan Randall realised he was good at woodwork there was only one option to follow.

The 20-year-old who went to Rickstone School, in Witham, studied an apprenticeship in cabinet making and is now fully qualified and working for a bespoke kitchen producer.

Ryan says: “I always enjoyed woodwork when I was at school and got an A in it for my exams, so it made sense to follow it as a career.

“I enjoy working with my hands and making things and it gives me a chance to really get stuck into a job.”

He completed a two-year apprenticeship in cabinet making at Colchester University, and is now working at Humphrey Munson Kitchens in Felsted.

The company has its own workshop of ten cabinet and kitchen makers and is known for its high-end products,.

Having made bespoke kitchens for former Oasis frontman and Brady Eye singer Lian Gallagher, the Prodigy’s Liam Howlett and Eighties heart-throb Nik Kershaw, the business has continued to grow since it was established by Peter Humphrey in 1995.

Peter, whose great-grandfather Joseph Muson was a cabinet maker, launched the business in Rayne, near Braintree, before moving to Dunmow and settling at the Kinvara Business Centre in Felsted. As well as a workshop he also has a showroom.

The very nature of bespoke kitchens means the finished products are not cheap, and Ryan is often making high-end kitchen, some costing up to £120,000.

He says: “I really enjoy my job. But it is hard work and you have to get it right. You have to be good with your hands and practise a lot. My favourite part is assembling it all. It’s good to see the finished product, you get a sense of satisfaction.”

Ryan and the team aim to make one kitchen a week and as a result are always busy.
