Students to hit Southend streets with theatre festival

PANDEMONIUM is set to hit Southend this weekend with two days of vibrant street performances.

The University of Essex’s East 15 Acting School is presenting a street theatre festival called Pandemonium.

The free event will see a variety of acts taking to the streets of the town, including circus shows, clown troupes, comedy sketches, children’s puppetry, open-air theatre and music.

The performances will take place in High Street, and outside the Royals Shopping Centre, in Pier Hill, from 11am and 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Pandemonium is being hosted by a group of BA honours community theatre students from East 15, one of the UK’s top five drama schools.

The community theatre course has been based at the University of Essex’s Southend campus since 2007, and prides itself on creating exciting theatre which engages the community.

Each of the performances have been devised by the students especially for the festival.

“The idea of Pandemonium is to give the people of Southend a bit of entertainment,” says marketing manager David Norton, who is also a student. “It’s shaping up to be a great weekend for all the family.”

A schedule of the event can be obtained from the university’s Southend campus, in Elmer Approach, or from town libraries.
