THIS summer is going to be all about celebrating the best of British.

With our athletes getting ready to compete in the London 2012 Olympics, it’s a great time to be living in the UK.

ANGELA POPLETT, Lakeside’s Personal Shopper, has been scouring the shops to help you get into the swing of things and prepare for the celebrations.

“If you’ve visited Lakeside recently, you’ll have noticed just how many shops and restaurants are embracing the British theme for the summer. There are plenty of quirky and fun items around, so here’s my pick of some of the best.

“Firstly, you’ll need some food to take to all those summer barbecues, street parties and picnics in the park. No-one’s doing this better right now than Marks and Spencer.

"They’ve got a whole range of treats packaged in Union Jacks, including iced white finger buns which are irresistible. A pack of five will set you back just 99p.

“BHS is leading the way with British-inspired homeware and they’ve got plenty of fun but chic items on the shelves. There’s a whole “Keep Calm” range that includes teapots and mugs (from £8), as well as delightful cupcake stands and picnic baskets.

"I’d recommend you take a look at their cushions, too, as there’s a huge choice of fun and funky designs including London buses, phone boxes and more.

“For clothing, it’s all about Union Jack designs. Next has a beautiful dress for girls aged 3-11 years in a softer shade of blue (instead of the strong navy) that’s £24.

"For ladies, there’s a fun bandeau bra top in New Look that costs just £3.99. It’d be perfect for a summer festival paired with some Union Jack wellies from Next (£25).

“The shoe shops have plenty of British-inspired items, too. My favourite is a heeled pair covered in a picnic blanket pattern with a Union Jack and heart on the front. They’re by Irregular Choice at Schuh (£65).

“For men, it’s less about iconic images and more about great British brands. You can’t go wrong with a classically cut suit from TM Lewin, for instance. They’ve got great tailoring and great offers covered this summer.

"Wear the suit with a pair of brogues from Jones the Bootmaker and you’ll look like the quintessential British gentleman.”
