WINTER'S on its way so now’s the time to buy some new wardrobe essentials to protect you from the cold. ANGELA POPLETT, Lakeside’s Personal Shopper, is here to help you find them.

“A new coat should be your first purchase for winter because its style and colour will dictate everything else that you buy. Make sure you check labels for high wool content as this is what will keep you warm.

"Coast at Lakeside has a beautiful coat in store (£195) that’s basic in design but comes in bright red and has high wool content. Debenhams’ Betty Jackson Black coats (£165) are equally smart with pretty detail.

“If you’re on a tighter budget, Lakeside’s Dorothy Perkins also has a bright red coat which is fantastic value for just £69. New Look has some bargains in store, too, like its mustard yellow double breasted coat (£39.99).

“A pair of riding boots should be your next winter purchase – they’re in practically every store this season!

"Dune has some gorgeous real leather pairs that have just been reduced to £159 and Lakeside’s Marks and Spencer is worth a look too, for a pair in a slightly darker shade (priced £95) that will look amazing on.

“The perfect trousers to tuck in to your riding boots are undoubtedly jodhpurs. Look out for skin-tight waisted styles in stretch cotton from Zara or H&M. Wear them with a silk blouse with a pussycat bow from Lakeside’s Phase Eight, Warehouse or Oasis (they’re a great alternative to a plain t-shirt).

“Finally, no winter outfit would be complete without a woolly jumper. This season’s staple is a woollen cardigan with a thick tie around the waist and a fun printed design. There are loads around so you can take your pick.

"Try Ralph Lauren in House of Fraser for an investment piece, or Lakeside’s Republic, Miss Selfridge and Marks and Spencer for cheaper alternatives.”
