KEEPING up with the latest trends can be tricky, but Angela Poplett, Lakeside’s Personal Shopper, is here to share her advice about the key new pieces to add to your wardrobe for autumn/winter 2011.

“Everything’s gone quite old fashioned this season! Skirts are pleated and the new length is mid-calf (very 1940s!). River Island and New Look at Lakeside have some great 40s-inspired pieces that’ll help you achieve the revived war-time look.

“Nothing sweetens up a mid-calf skirt quite like ankle socks and Mary Janes – and you can’t beat Office or Schuh for the best new footwear. It might sound like a very old fashioned style, but the socks will actually help with the length which can be unflattering unless you’ve got great ankles and lower legs!

“Accessories are a fantastic way to completely transform a look without spending a fortune. Hats have made a real comeback this season and a fedora will instantly update any outfit. Lakeisde’s Aldo has a fantastic example in three autumnal shades that’ll look great paired with a classic mac.

“Sticking with the old fashioned theme, broaches are big again this season and Lakeside’s charity shops (British Heart Foundation and Barnardos) often have some absolute gems. Cameo broaches are particularly cool for decorating just about any lapel, blouse, hat or pussycat bow.

“For the hottest new designer ranges, visit the bigger and better Choice store that just re-opened on Brompton Walk. “Finally, if you’re going to splash out on just one new item this season, make sure it comes in leather. It’s a timeless material that comes back in fashion year after year so it certainly won’t be a waste of your money. Wear leather pieces from Oasis with faux fur and tweed to get that perfect mix of old fashioned and modern elegance.”
