ANGELA Poplett, Lakeside’s Personal Shopper, reveals the clothing and accessory tricks that’ll make you feel fabulous this new year.

“Underwear is a fantastic shape maker – but try to forget about the awful Bridget Jones knickers.

"Those big pants are hard to forget – for all the wrong reasons! They’re genuinely a great idea as long as you buy the right ones.

"Primark and M&S both stock versions that start underneath the edge of your bra then finish mid-thigh. This means you get a completely smooth shape without nasty bulges halfway down.

“The strapless bra is another fantastic cheat if you’re not brave enough to go braless while there’s still a chill in the air.

"The Wonderbra version from Debenhams not only gives you lift, but it’s even got a plunge section at the front so it works with lower necklines too.

"In a nude colour with cream lace, it’s pretty and really stays put. La Senza’s multi-way bras are also worth a look and are priced very reasonably.

“In the clothing department, be sure to wear vertical stripes or, if you want to wear horizontal ones, make sure they’re as thin as possible. Be wary of cutting across the body in too many places as this will also make you look shorter.

“Bodycon dresses should be embraced no matter what your size or shape. They’re made from strong lycra fabrics so they’re incredibly flattering.

"Don’t be put off in the fitting room if you’re wearing the wrong underwear with them; take them home and give them a go. You’ll find some bargains in Lakeside’s Phase Eight and Paper Sun sales.”
