THE start of a new year is the perfect time to set yourself some new goals, make some changes and re-focus on what’s important. But knowing where to start is often the biggest challenge of all so Lakeside’s Personal Shopper, ANGELA POPLETT is here with some advice on the small steps you can take to and start 2013 on a positive note.

She said: “A lot of people set themselves huge targets at the start of the year and then fail almost straight away because they’ve taken on too much. Instead, make some small adjustments and you might just find that the rest will follow. It’s simple: when you feel good, it’s easier to be good (and go to the gym, resist that muffin…).

“A good thing to start with is your hair because its one of the first things people notice about you. Rather than diving in and regretting a dramatic cut, book a couple of hair consultations and get a feel for what you might like to try. A good hairdresser won’t mind you doing this - try Lakeside’s Rush and Toni & Guy salons for a couple of different approaches.

“Similarly, you can go and have a makeover at a few beauty counters at Lakeside for free, then choose to purchase if you want to. Instead of sticking to what you know, try a different brand like Benefit, Estee Lauder or Bare Minerals in House of Fraser or Debenhams. Make sure you ask questions and get tips on the application of make-up, too, so you get the most from your session.

“Aches and pains can really get you down so invest in an occasional sports massage at Lakeside’s Dove Spa and you could feel like a whole new person. Priced at £32.50 for 30 minutes, it’s another small change that could make a big difference to how you feel on a day-to-day basis.

“Or, if problems with your skin make you want to hide away from the world, talk to Dove Spa about Murad which is a new, gentle peel (£60) that can work wonders on scars, sun damage, blemishes and fine lines. They’ve often got great deals on the Murad at-home products too so you can transform your look without resorting to anything too drastic.

“For a bit of indulgence at home that can act as a brilliant pick-me-up, treat yourself to a No 7 ‘perfect pedicure’ set for £15 from Boots. They don’t cost the earth and can make you feel that little bit better (and now’s a good time to start getting those feet ready for summer!).

“Finally, if you’re looking for someone to help boost your confidence, transform your look or help you choose the right shapes, colours and sizes in the shops, book a free consultation with one of Lakeside’s Personal Shoppers.

"There’s absolutely no obligation to buy anything that’s recommended for you but it might just give you some new ideas and the boost you need to try something a bit different for 2013.”
