GRAYS (AFTERNOON) TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

MEMBERS and visitors met on Wednesday, July 18, at the Methodist Church hall, Hathaway Road, Grays, welcomed by chairman Audrey Haines.

She spoke about outings, particularly to Hylands Park on August 23 and Buckingham Palace on September 14.

Rita Donaldson, for the Lightcraft Section, reminded members of the craft afternoon on September 19, all of these events occurring before our next meeting on September 26.

Audrey then made a double presentation to Dorothy Boral. Firstly Dorothy was presented with her medal for 40 years membership of the guild and in celebration of her 90th birthday was presented with flowers and a cake, decorated appropriately by Mary Peters.

Our speaker for the afternoon Sue Schwar was welcomed and spoke about South Essex Wildlife Hospital.

She told us of its beginnings some 22 years ago and how she got to be known as someone who would help injured and sick animals, starting off in her parent's smallholding.

Everything they do is funded by voluntary contributions entirely spent on the animals, without support they could not continue. Yvonne Lauder gave the vote of thanks and a donation for Sue's work.

The competition result was a tie for first place between Dorothy Boral and Jemima Jeffrey, and second Rita Donaldson.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, September 26, at the Methodist Church hall at 1.30pm when the speaker will be Angela Collins on My Life with Puppets.

The competition will be a puppet or poy. Visitors and new members are very welcome.
